What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear!
What a friend we have in Jesus, our hurt and pain to share.
Jesus gives us all his blessing, brings joy and pleasure everywhere,
And whatever doubts we’re having, we take them to him in prayer.
For good fortune we give thanks to him upon his heav’nly throne,
Even if, to be quite honest, we had to make it on our own.
Although Jesus never answers, we know that he is always there.
And we know he loves us deeply, though he never answers prayer.
Jesus never gives us counsel, nor does he protect or heal,
he won’t even talk to us or pat our shoulders while we kneel.
Jesus is all-powerful, but still he does not lift a hand,
to save a child or feed the hungry, or help bring peace to any land.
We talk to him, he does not listen, we pray, he does not do a thing.
He does not even have the grace to thank us for the hymns we sing.
Jesus won’t lend us a hand, even if we cry and bawl;
What a friend we have in Jesus – almost like no friend at all.
