Both moustaches looked somehow influential

I did an interview! In English! (As a text chat.)

Don’t quite know why it happened. Long story short: There is a thing called Theology Today Podcast, and they have a youtube channel, a Discord, and, as it turned out, some rather unacceptable misogyny going on.

But you know me, I’m vain enough to still publish the interview, and it was really okay right until the end, so it might even be nice to read if you like that kind of thing. Nothing special, though, right until the end.

Here it is:

Muriel Hello!
Aref 😵 Oh Hello Muriel
Let’s start our 77 minutes in moments
just hold on a couple of seconds for me to get my clock set

The Clock is set Muriel. First question, do you like to introduce yourself? whats your nickname , name, where you live, age range… anything that you feel comfortable to share
Muriel
Sure. I’m Muriel, which is the name in my passport as well as my nick here [This part is a dirty, stinking lie, since I changed my name in this transcription to protect the inno…  Uhm. No matter.] , I live in Hannover, Germany, I’m 36 years old, work in a small medical supply company and dabble in writing (blogging as well as fiction) as a hobby. I also like role-playing, pen&paper as well as LARP. Oh, and I’m an atheist and consider myself a skeptic, which might or might not be relevant to this interview.

Aref 😵
Oh ok, can i ask when did you became an atheist in your life and why

if you could summarize that, that would be wonderful
Muriel
I guess I’ve always been an atheist in the sense that I never believed in any gods. I became more outspoken about it after learning more about skepticism and proper epistemology when I was about 13, if I remember correctly. Martin Garnder’s books helped me along the way. Might a bit ironic since he was a theist.
Aref 😵
What do you like in life, and what do you hate in life Muriel
Muriel
Big questions. I’ll try to boil it down. I like good stories, interesting conversations, travelling, learning new things. I hate … whatchamacallit? Wilfull ignorance and needless … let’s say injustice for lack of a better word. Like what a lot of the political right can be seen doing right now. It’s not even putting their own interests above others‘, it’s not even understanding neither their own interests‘, nor the others‘.
Aref 😵
you mentioned you like to write on a blog, would you like to share your blog address in our server
Muriel
Sure, although most entries are in German, so it won’t be interesting to most people here. It’s https://ueberschaubarerelevanz.com/
Aref 😵
what do you write the most in your blog , what topics are they
Muriel
Hmmm… I guest most of my recent posts are kind of criticising media for not doing their job properly? My last post was about some guy who wrote in FAZ (important German newspaper) about the evils of politically correct language, and I examined his arguments, and found them wanting, in a light-hearted, funny way. At least, that’s what I like to tell myself after I published it.

Muriel
There are also a lot of my stories there, and one is even in English, so … Just saying.
Aref 😵
hmmm, Stories as in Fictional stories?
Muriel
Yes, I’m a writer. I dabble in a lot of genres. Two of my novels have even been published (in a very small sort of way). I enjoy it.
Aref 😵
and you write in german am i right?

what i mean like, just like your blog, your stories are in german as well i guess
Muriel
Mostly. There are some blogposts in English, and one of my stories is in English, as well. It’s called „Angelic Duties“ and is probably best categorized as Fantasy.
Aref 😵
well that is really intresting, do you use your atheistic views in your fantasy stories as well?
Muriel
Well… I wouldn’t use the term „atheistic views“. It’s a bit like asking if I use my view that Smaug isn’t real in my stories. Then again, I do have a perspective on the world, and that certainly shows in my stories, although I don’t think you could easily tell that I’m an atheist by reading them, if that’s your question.

It’s not like with Terry Goodkind, who makes his protagonist give 20-page-speeches about Objectivism to his awed followers.
Aref 😵
well, that’s decent of you i guess. why did you started becoming an atheist, and why you gave up on the love of Jesus Christ
Muriel
As I said, I always was an atheist, and I never found any reasons to become convinced of the existence of any gods. About Jesus: I don’t know the guy, but if he loves me, he should probably contact me in some way and I’d be willing to explore the possibilities.
Aref 😵
well, since this is an interview, i don’t want to turn it into a debate i guess, so i want to ask a fun question. what would you do if you became the president of Germany ? tell me the first thing that you would have like to do in Germany
Muriel
Oooohh… Politics is always easy in terms of „Which outcome would I like to achieve“ and very difficult in terms of „What do I have to do to achieve that outcome“. The first few things that come to mind is open the borders, be better towards refugees, establish real separation between government and churches and abolish some laws like the criminalization of drugs, incest. Maybe try to put the whole legal system on a more rational, scientific basis. Does this make sense to you? I realize it’s a bit confused…

Oh, and education! We do need better schools and more rational education.
Aref 😵
well, you throw a kind of heavy word on there which i don’t want to dwell on, but i do agree with you on education definitely aside from writing fiction, what are your other talents in life so far, what skills you have or what art do you know(bearbeitet)
Muriel
Which word do you mean, just for curiosity’s sake? But to answer your question: I have studied a mixture of law and business, so I guess that’s a skill I acquired. I hope I’m a decent writer in non-fiction as well as fiction. I’m hopeless in some areas of art like painting, although I recently found a way to learn at least basic techniques. I’m not musical at all. Something that comes to mind concerning talents: I’m a rather calm person, which makes me able to have difficult conversations without escalating, and I like to think this helps me in my job (with customers and colleagues alike), but also in having discussions with people. (I do have a case of the „Someone is wrong on the internet!“ syndrome, as becomes obvious to anyone reading my blog.)
Aref 😵
well the word incest and drugs, which i think many people will agree that they are both horrible. but a question is , since you studied law and business, what exactly you do in a health clinic? shouldnt you be a lawyer or a stock broker? and speaking of books, when was your last book published and are you want to continue writing fiction in the future?
Muriel
Ah, I see. Well, there’s more nuance to it, of course, but if you don’t want to go into it, I’ll respect that. Towards your questions: It’s not a health clinic so much, we sell medical supplies like wheelchairs, prosthesis, enteral nutrition, so we are a small business and as such need businesspeople. I sometimes wish I knew more about the medical side of things, but no one can be an expert in everything.

My last book was published somewhere in the middle of 2018, and I will definitely continue writing. I don’t expect it to ever pay all my bills, but since I write for fun anyway, I see no harm in publishing it aftwards.
Aref 😵
speaking of not paying your bills, do you mean that your last book, was somehow not much popular among people?
Muriel
It was published by a very very small and young publishing house without much marketing sway, so there was no big chance of selling thousands of copies. They also rely on their authors‘ networks, and I don’t have a lot of that. So you could say my work is definitely not popular, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not good. But I’m the guy who writes it, what should I say?

Aref 😵
so far about our server, what do you like in it, and what do you hate about it, and give us your suggestions to make it better
Muriel
I like the diversity and the many different positions that can be found here. I wouldn’t say I hate anything about it, but as with discussion everywhere, there could be more exchange of positions and open-mindedness, I guess. People tend to go into a discussion with the aim of winning by showing the other party the errors of their ways. That doesn’t make it easy to evaluate their contributions fairly. Not sure what you could do about that, though.
Aref 😵
do you have any ideas to make our server better Muriel
Muriel
Maybe stricter moderation would be needed in some cases, more steering the conversation into a constructive direction? But I realise that takes a lot of effort, and we all have lives outside of debating people online.
Aref 😵
have you in your life considered what your life would end up if you became religious and started reading the bible in your life
Muriel
Well… I actually have read the bible, although it was quite a chore. I tend to think if I actually became religious, I’d take it more seriously than the religious people I know of. But that kind of thing is hard to estimate in advance. Would depend on which religion, too. I’d certainly have a very different life whether I became a Scientologist or a Jain, a Buddhist or a Wiccan…(bearbeitet)
Aref 😵
well, so far since you have been an atheist since 13 years of old, don’t you think you became biased toward a certain theory in your life and never looked back?
Muriel
Oooh well, there is that famous quote, I can’t remember whom it’s attributed to, that atheists are boring because all they do is talk about God. I wouldn’t agree with that completely, but I can at least say that I have a lot of discussions with religious people, I listen to shows like The Atheist Experience, where (not only) theists call in to debate with the hosts, so I’m exposed to different perspectives fairly regularly.

I obviously am biased in a lot of respects, we all are. I try to be aware of it and not let it influence me too much, in every area of my life. I guess that’s all we can do. And I’m always open for ideas on how to do better.
Aref 😵
well, i sure hope you get good information here from our members and this server be constructive for you. last question, what do you think when of when Hitler said „Stalin is clown who i will set his large Moustache on fire with my inner Fury“

Muriel
I never heard of this quote, but I will just assume he actually said it in answering your question: I think he was mistaken.

Aref 😵
Actually there is no quotation like this i just said this to laugh a little
Muriel
You rogue, you.
Aref 😵
but seriously, why do you think Stalin had a large Moustache yet Hitler moustache looked like it’s been handicapped lol
Muriel
Maybe they went to different barbers? I imagine it would just have been practical, living so far away from each other.
Aref 😵

stalin

Lol
Muriel
Those guys certainly had different mustaches.
Aref 😵
But both Moustaches looked somehow influencal

apparently Appearance works on dumb people
Muriel
I guess they were, up to and including this interview.

I’m afraid appearance works on us all.
Aref 😵
well, not all people in my opinion are that weak to fall for a certain haircut and a cool moustache. but then again i still like that Harlot Ariana Grande a little bit so as you said appearance works on all of us. well 2 minute left i guess i should at this point thank you for having this interview with me

[After the exchange of some pleasantries including me reciprocating his thanks, he mentioned “The Harlot Ariana Grande” without a reason I could see, to which I objected. He told me to continue in the #General channel and apparently deleted the last part in Interview. It was gone when I copied this. He left the part in #General, though:]
Aref 😵
oh

i say she is a harlot
Muriel
It seems you do.
Aref 😵
@Muriel , cause she has incredibly promiscuous behavior
Muriel
Then it is a rather distasteful sexist slur, and I’m glad you said it in the end of our interview, so I didn’t have to end it prematurely.

Thank you for explaining, and have nice day!
Aref 😵

well, i do have other reasons too

but i guess at this point your busy
Viktir 💬

Watch one of her music videos in which she displays everything but her insides… and gets paid to do it. Yeah I’d call that a harlot
Aref 😵

@Muriel , yes you know Viktir put it in a better perspective

i don’t like the people that their main talent is showing their bodies on music videos
Muriel
It’s indeed time for me to leave, because I don’t want to continue talking to you. Best wishes and all.
Viktir 💬
lol bye

Enjoy all the incest
Aref 😵
@Muriel Goodbye Muriel and thanks for the interview

This is so weird. „Let’s discuss mass murderer’s moustaches to lighten the mood!“ But, apart from that and the stuff you highlighted and some leading questions („why did you give up on the love of jesus christ?“), this is a rather nice interview.

  2. Muriel sagt:

I knew the guy (?) was weird. I found it most surprising when he went from funny weird to … Christian.
